Hi, John Baird in Wisconsin: I enjoyed your article on Schubert and Winterreise (and Chekhov) today.I wonder if you’ve read an excellent book by the singer Ian Bostridge: Schubert’s Winter Journey: Anatomy of an Obsession? Well worth reading. Another favourite Schubert book is Schubert: The Complete Song Texts with English translations by Richard Wigmore. The German (or French or Italian) original texts of all 600+ songs and their English translations in a large, portable paperback. In Wigmore’s translation the flowers are ‘bright’ rather than beautiful. His version of Der Wegweiser goes: I see a signpost standing/Immovable before my eyes; /I must travel a road/From which no man has ever returned.
