Blackwing alert: Alongside an Olivetti Lettera 22 (buy two of those, and you have an Olivetti Lettera 44), and some mathematical calculations concerning Mary & Ann (I think I prefer Mary & Jane), there lies a Palomino Blackwing 42. I asked a stationer to saw one in half, call it “21”, and charge me half price. Nothing doing.

I should have said ‘on’ the spool cover rather than ‘alongside’.

Chilly, I think your answer is more accurate than Tabi the cat’s answer, however your and his logic were similar…By the way, welcome to OTP. Nice Voss you have there.

Thank you so much Catalina. I’m delighted to be here. I’ve really been longing to get a cat lately and because of that, I have been thinking more like a cat! (Hence the logic similarity with that of Tabi!) 🐈 The only thing that could make the Voss better would be to have a cat occasionally rub up against it as he or she casually sashays across my writing desk. (I should really look into getting a cat!) hahaha

Hello Chilly and Catalina! I’m glad you had a bit of fun with the puzzle, it definitely is not an easy one. I like your approach Chilly about cutting out all the garbage, but in this case there are references to three different ages of each, so it looks like back to the drawing board if you are inclined, Tabi too. I’ll type my solution at some stage. I finished up using simultaneous equations giving Mary as 27½ years and Ann as 16½ years. Cheers!

Chilly, my cats love to be close to my Voss, but they run off while I’m typing. I got a clear vinyl cover to keep the cat hair out and still be able to see it’s lovely, cloud-like curves! I look forward to reading about your cat decision.

My son just solved it and will provide the equations. Mary is 11 years older than Ann.
