Many years ago I met an Alaskian school teacher who was earning his Masters at the U of Oregon. The state furnished he and his wife with much, but life was still difficult. He shared the experience of his mother-in-law coming from Chicago to visit. They knew she liked only prime beef and fresh fruit. His wife did her best, feeding her doctored bear meat and apple sauce pie. Mama never knew.
