  1. Erratum: Sorry, readers of Caroline Says, and any Russian-speakers: I was inconsistent on today’s page with the spelling for the English form of ‘uncle’ in Russian. It should be :

As you probably know, that word is pronounced ‘horosho’; not everyone knows that in Anthony Burgess’s ‘A Clockwork Orange’, where the slang called ‘Nadsat’ was based on Russian, (some copies carried a glossary at the back,) ‘horrorshow’ was Alex’s version of ‘cool’. I think it was later adopted by Bowie on the Diamond Dogs album which was equally influenced by ‘1984’.
