I agree, Alex. Days from death, in his living room, with his entire family and nurses-round-the-clock, unable to see, hear or speak, my brother-in-law was still able to write on a whiteboard: “But who’s paying for all this?” I don’t know of anybody who just ‘is’ – unless they’re comatose, and we don’t know what’s going on there, anyway. On a lighter note, in a book about Edward Hopper, whose last painting in 1966 showed two commedia dell’arte performers taking a bow onstage, the writer compares this farewell to what Mel Blanc (the voice of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig) had written on his gravestone: “That’s all, folks!”

I’ve got a lot of time on my hands. And I like the whiskey.
