Linda, that’s very sweet of you to offer, but I have more things than I need already. Even this Saturday I’m picking up my 20th typewriter, my 5th Olympia Traveller de Luxe, for the princely sum of £14, (about $17) and the long journey to the outer reaches of the east end of London (actually called Barking – there’s no getting away from dogs) will cost me nothing because old farts like me travel free on buses and trains in this great metropolis. (Well, £10 for the year, which is practically free!) But thanks again, it’s appreciated.

Who would have guessed you were Welsh, Linda! l’m British through being born in London where I’ve lived all my life, but my blood is Spanish from both parents, if blood counts for anything. I’ve only been to Spain a handful of times that wouldn’t add up to a month of my life. I’ve been to Wales twice: to Fishguard, a town with only 3,500 inhabitants, where Under Milk Wood was filmed with Taylor and Burton and O’Toole, and Gregory Peck’s version of Moby Dick. Also Carmarthen, where a friend of the family, “Uncle John”, was from. Probably the kindest man I ever knew.
