Adam in Melbourne: I enjoyed very much your post re flying the Chipmunk. It struck me how different the controls and instrument (locations) are on different planes. (Note: I’m not a pilot.) When I drive a different car, the controls don’t vary that much (except, of course in the UK): the clutch, brake, and throttle pedals are all where they should be (at least THAT’S consistent in the UK), and the gear shift location is pretty much where I expect it to be (unless it’s “three on the column”, but then I haven’t driven one of those in many years). So, I can appreciate the need to rapidly acquire the necessary dexterity in handling the controls of a new (to you) airplane. At least in a car, I could pull over to the side of the road and acquaint myself with the controls from a stopped position!
